When Huldrych Zwingli came to Zurich in 1519 he changed many things for the people of Zurich and the Grossmunster church. The ambitious parish priest broke from the previous catholic traditions and began to proclaim a new interpretation of the Bible. Anything that was not mentioned in the original version of the scriptures should be banned from religious life; holy images, sacred chant, relics and more.
In 1549, Heinrich Bullinger developed the “Consensus Tigurinus” together with Johannes Calvin, a reformer from western Switzerland. In addition to this he also wrote the reform of faith in the shape of the 2nd Helvetic Confession of 1566, which until today remains the binding basis of faith of the reformed churches of eastern Europe.
It is thanks to the Reformation that the citizens of Zurich have become a hard-working and business-minded people to this present day. In the wake of the reformation and the abolition of public holidays, Zurich became an important economic hub and then a centre of finance. Up to the 20th century, Zurich was an important centre of the European silk industry. And under the guidance of Alfred Escher, a politician and industrial pioneer who studied under a reformed theologian, Zurich witnessed the emergence of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the company now known as Credit Suisse, as well as several insurance companies.
In this anniversary year, Zurich Tourism are organising various guided tours of the city on the theme of the Reformation.
Zurich is a worthwhile destination in any season: in the summer, the rivers and lakes are particularly popular with swimmers and bathers. If you visit Zurich in April you can experience the traditional “Sechseläuten” Spring Festival, others come and dance in August at the incomparable Street Parade around the Lake Zurich. In October, connoisseurs come to the party, especially when there’s a chance to taste the region’s new young wines on a hike around Lake Zurich. And those who visit Zurich in December can experience a magical Christmas with many Christmas markets, the “Märlitram” (a festively- decorated tram) and wonderful Christmas traditions. Whether spring, summer, autumn or winter: Zurich is beautiful all year round.
