Art and culture in Martigny

We recommend travelling comfortably by train to Martigny, where you can start your (e-)bike tour in a relaxed atmosphere at the comfortable Hotel Vatel. Art lovers can reach the renowned Fondation Gianadda in just a few minutes from here, where you can enjoy top-class exhibitions. Complete your stay with a visit to the Barry Museum and discover the moving history of the St Bernard dogs. If you want to take it easy, the thermal springs in Lavey-les-Bains are the perfect place to relax before the first stage. In the evening, a multi-course dinner awaits you as part of the half-board package.

Stage 1: From the Rhone in Valais to the Fribourg hills of Les Paccots

After a restful night at the Hotel Vatel, your tour starts on Rhone Route No. 1 in charming Martigny, where vines, forests and the history of the St Bernard dogs come together. Through the nature reserve near Evionnaz, the route leads past kingfishers, frogs and colourful butterflies to Saint-Maurice, whose abbey impresses with its church treasures. From here, the ‘Chablais’ begins, which stretches along the Rhone in a flat and relaxed manner to Bouveret on Lake Geneva. The paths are popular, especially with leisurely cyclists. At the Passerelle des Grangettes and in the ‘Petit Camargue’ area, you will encounter an abundance of wildlife. Once you reach Lake Geneva, things get livelier. Tourists flock to Chillon Castle. The route continues along the flower-lined lakeside promenade to Montreux and on to Vevey, where the life-size monument to Charlie Chaplin is a popular photo opportunity. From Vevey, it's time to pedal harder - the route now leads uphill into the Gruyère region on cycle route no. 9 ‘Lake Route’. In Corsier, it's worth making a detour to the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church and Chaplin's World, an interactive museum about the life and work of Charlie Chaplin. The artist lived here with his family for the last 25 years of his life. Accompanied by the sound of grazing cows, the route continues through lush green hilly landscapes up to Châtel-Saint-Denis, where you turn right at the crossroads instead of following the route to the left and continue to Les Paccots to the Boutique Hotel Corbetta. Here you can enjoy regional cuisine in two restaurants, a small but excellent spa and a cosy bar.

Stage 2: Through the Lavaux wine terraces to Prangins

From Les Paccots, cycle back to Châtel-Saint-Denis, where you rejoin lake route no. 9. Follow this until Les Monts-de-Corsier. Then leave cycle route no. 9 and cycle on towards Jongny. From there, route no. 478 takes you through the famous Lavaux wine terraces with their breathtaking views of the lake and mountains. Once you reach Chexbres, you switch back to the Rhone route no. 1, passing picturesque winegrowing villages such as Epesses - the ‘Coeur du Vignoble en terrasses’ - and Lutry, where you can enjoy the ride through one of the country's most spectacular cultural landscapes.  The wine route ends in Lutry. It is now around five kilometres to Lausanne-Ouchy - along the lake, always with a view of the Alps. In Ouchy, it is worth visiting the Olympic Museum, which was opened in 1993 on the initiative of IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch and extensively modernised in 2013. Lausanne, the capital of the canton of Vaud, is charmingly situated on a hill and offers an exciting mix of history and innovation with its Gothic cathedral, the old town and numerous university and research centres. A particularly beautiful section of the route awaits you between St-Sulpice and Préverenges, where the Venoge, a 38-kilometre-long tributary of Lake Geneva, flows into its destination. Sandy beaches and sunbathing lawns invite you to linger here before continuing on to Morges. The route takes you from the charming old town of Morges via medieval St-Prex and historic Rolle with its castle through varied landscapes and partly modern industrial zones until you finally arrive in Prangins. A little paradise on Lake Geneva awaits you here at the Hotel la Barcarolle - cool off right in front of the hotel!
