The best place to start your culinary voyage of discovery is Andermatt - the ideal starting point for your Graubünden voyage of discovery. The train climbs leisurely towards the Oberalp Pass. The Rhine has its source nearby. Its source lies at the small, mystical Tomasee lake at the foot of Piz Badus. The Rhine connects the Alps with the North Sea and is one of the most important rivers in Europe. So it was that, in the spirit of this connection between mountain and sea, the highest lighthouse in the world (2046 metres above sea level) is located on the Oberalp Pass. The next section of the route takes you into the Rhine Gorge. Ruinaulta is what the locals call the monumental Rhine Gorge between Ilanz and Reichnau in Romansh. The gorge was formed 10,000 years ago by the Flims landslide and today forms a unique natural backdrop: turquoise-green water and rock faces up to 350 metres high. Enjoy lunch in Chur before taking the Postbus to Lenzerheide.
Arrival by car:
You have the option of parking the car in Chur at the P+Rail and then arriving in Lenzerheide by Postauro. The cost of a parking space is CHF 12 per day. For an excursion to the Rhine Gorge from Chur, we recommend the return journey to Ilanz (e.g. with the Rhine Gorge Adventure Train: 13.6.-25.10.20, Chur from 08.34 / Ilanz to 09.23 - Ilanz from 11.41 or 15.58 / Chur to 12.29 or 16.45).
Culture tip Chur: The exhibition "The Great Panoramas" by Grisons artist Giovanni Giaccometti in the Grisons Art Museum (open daily except Mondays, admission CHF 15.- per person). The yellow bus will take you from Chur directly to your accommodation: the Schweizerhof Lenzerheide****S, a house with tradition & modernity, environmental awareness and living hospitality! Here you will spend the next 2 nights.
Your accommodation in the Lenzerheide: At the Schweizerhof Lenzerheide****S, those seeking relaxation will find the largest hotel hamam in the entire Alpine region, while culinary lovers will find three first-class restaurants - with natural products, whenever possible from the region. On one evening the Schweizerhof team will spoil you with a 6-course gourmet dinner in the hotel restaurant, on the other evening they will serve you exclusive specialities in "Scalottas Terroir". It's not just because of this that the Scalottas has been awarded a MICHELIN Green Star: All dishes are conjured up using ingredients from near-natural production, some even from the restaurant's own farmland - as well as with a renunciation of products from factory farming and a careful use of resources. A true culinary highlight!
In the afternoon of the 1st day of the tour and on the 2nd day of the tour you have the choice: would you rather explore the landscape with its majestic mountain peaks on foot or by e-bike? The hotel's own e-bikes are at your disposal. For your picnic on the way, you will receive a rucksack on the 2nd day of your journey, filled with the finest products from the region (bread from the wood-fired oven, cheese from Floh Bienerth from Andeer, Salsiz from Brügger, preserves from Hansjörg Ladurner).
Excursion tips in Lenzerheide:
After a hearty breakfast with a selection of abundant natural products from the region at the Hotel Schweizerhof, hand in your suitcase at reception and set off weightlessly - with only your day's luggage on your back - on your next Graubünden adventure. From Lenzerheide you can take the post bus to Tiefencastel. There the Rhaetian Railway runs on the Albula line to the Upper Engadine (train ticket included with the GraubündenPass).
Your accommodation in the Engadine: for the next 2 nights your host is the Hotel Saratz****S. Elegant but familiar, modern but charming - and in the combination of old and new it exudes one thing above all: atmosphere. Here, modern lifestyle is combined with Engadine hotel tradition, grandezza with design, nature with architecture. Enjoy your welcome drink on the sun terrace with a view of the Val Roseg. The 35'000m2 hotel park with heated outdoor swimming pool and sand tennis court as well as the wellness area including indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, Saracen bath with various saunas and steam baths provide relaxation.
Culinary delights include a delicious 4-course gourmet dinner in the Art Nouveau restaurant on one evening and an inventive menu in the modern Giodi Vegetarian & Co. on the other. In the morning you will enjoy a balanced and rich Engadine breakfast buffet with Saratz specialities every day.
On the 3rd day of your journey, the day of your arrival in Pontresina, a cheese experience awaits you: take an easy hike (approx. 70 minutes) to the alpine show dairy Morteratsch. Experience traditional cheese production at first hand on the idyllic alp! Until 3 October, the alpine master produces Heutaler cheese, glacier mutschli and fresh Molkenziger (ricotta) over an open fire every day. Afterwards, a fine dried meat and cheese plate awaits you in the alpine restaurant. Back at the hotel, muscle relaxation awaits you in the wellness area and a treat for the palate in one of the two hotel restaurants.
On the 4th day of your journey, enjoy a rich breakfast with products from the region. Afterwards, the 2nd part of the UNESCO World Heritage Albula/Bernina route awaits you. On the famous Bernina route you meander leisurely into Valposchiavo. In the Puschlav, many a place invites you to get off the train, including Le Prese - a settlement nestled between steep mountain flanks directly on Lago di Poschiavo. At Hotel Le Prese you will be treated to a fine 3-course menu with ingredients 100% from Valposchiavo (95% organic). If you want, you can do another stop over in Poschiavo for a wine tasting and introduction into the art of Demeter wine culture at LA TORRE -(surcharge of CHF 15.- per person). The return journey is on the Bernina line to Pontresina.
