The Ionian Coast - the east coast of Sicily - stretches from the lava stonebuilt port city of Catania through charming fishing villages and romantic beaches to the magical ancient Greek city of Taormina. The entire coast is dominated by mighty Mount Etna whose presence has shaped the entire region geologically as well as historically.
The Etna (Unesco World Heritage Site since 2013) is undoubtedly the king of the region and hiking on its slopes is an unforgettable experience in any season. The towns and villages at the foot of Etna are all built
of lava stone. North of Taormina towards Messina stretch the Peloritani Mountains with millennia-old villages, deep valleys and breathtaking views. The region around Mount Etna is famous for mushrooms, sausages
and blood oranges. Catania’s speciality are Pasta alla Norma, Arancini (deep-fried rice balls stuffed with meat sauce or mozzarella and ham), gelati and granite (originally made from Etna’s snow). Vineyards cover
the lower fertile slopes of the volcano and - pressed from regional grape varieties such as Nero d’Avola or Nerello Mascalese - produce excellent, voluminous wines.
