Day 1: Arrival via the UNESCO World Heritage Line of the Albula Line

Individual journey to Chur/Thusis by train or car. You have the possibility to leave your car at the P+Rail in Chur for CHF 12 per day for a maximum of 7 days. Continue with the Rhaetian Railway on the Albula line in the direction of St. Moritz.

Tipps for your itineray:

Visit to the Albula railway museum in Bergün:

Get off the train in Bergün and immerse yourself in the railway history of the canton of Graubünden at the Albula railway museum. Old railway paraphernalia, films and models will immerse you. In the simulator you have the opportunity to take the locomotive across the Albula line yourself for once.

Medium-difficulty hike on the railway adventure trail on the Via Albula/Bernina from Bergün to Preda:
The hiking trail along the UNESCO World Heritage route of the Rhaetian Railway runs as close as possible to the Albula and Bernina lines and offers enchanting views of a total work of art over 100 years old in a magnificent Alpine landscape. The hike takes about 2h30 and there are 500 metres of altitude difference to overcome. (see map material)

Medium-difficult mountain hike to the beautiful, deep-clear Palpuogna lake - our insider tip! The hike starts in Preda and ends in Spinas. It is a stage of the Via Albula/Bernina and takes about 4h30. There are about 700 meters of altitude difference to overcome. (see maps)

Day 2: Hiking with a view of the lakes

On the first day of the hike, you are spoilt for choice. Whether it's a hike to Piz Nair or to Muottas Muragl. There are many hiking opportunities in the immediate vicinity of the Cresta Palace. In the Cresta Palace's own competence centre for outdoor activities, you will receive the best advice in the "Staziun sa basa".

Day 3: Hiking experience Diavolezza

After a hearty breakfast from the buffet, leave your luggage at reception for onward transport and take the Bernina Express train from Celerina for about an hour in the direction of Diavolezza/Poschiavo to the Ospizio, Bernina stop. T.his is where your medium-difficulty, scenic hike begins. The walking time is 3h30 and the altitude difference is 800 metres (see map).

This stage begins with a leisurely stroll along Lago Bianco. Behind the dam, the path leads into a wide alpine path past Lej Nair and Lej Pitschen. At the height of Lej Pitschen, the leisurely pace is over. The path branches off to the left and climbs over alpine meadows up to Lej d'Arlas and then in steeper terrain to Lej da Diavolezza. The turquoise-blue lake would be a good time to take a break, as the trail then climbs up in rocky terrain to the Diavolezza and the finish of the day's stage, the Diavolezza mountain inn. Those who have not yet gained enough altitude can continue their hike, passing the Berghaus, over a ridge and in the scree up to Munt Pers (about 1 hour's walk). Return to the mountain house along the same path. Those who do not want to hike up to Munt Pers can also treat themselves to a wellness break in the Jacuzzi on the panorama terrace.

The Diavolezza aerial cableway will take you down in comfort and without damaging your knees. The descent is also possible on foot. For example, you can already descend to the valley station at Lej da Diavolezza. The descent from the lake takes about 1 hour. If you first ascend to Berghaus Diavolezza, the descent to Lej da Diavolezza would be the same as the ascent.

Alternatives or extension:
Starting point: For all 3 walks you start from the Diavolezza mountain station. From Pontresina to the valley station and back again you can reach the valley comfortably with the Rhaetian Railway.

Medium difficulty hike to Lej da Collinas:
The descent, with an altitude difference of around 1,100 metres, is quite a challenge. From the Diavolezza top station, you can bypass the Diavolezza firn field by going directly up to the chairlift terminus. The path that runs parallel to the chairlift descends and then traverses the Pers flank. Shortly afterwards you will reach Lej da Diavolezza and then Lej da las Collinas. The area between Lake Collinas and Lake Pers is a marshy area with rare plant and animal species. It is worth stopping here and enjoying the unique view. The way back to the Diavolezza valley station leads through beautiful alpine rose bushes and if you are lucky you might even see a chamois. Walking time approx. 3 hours (see maps).

Medium difficulty hike to Lej da Diavolezza:
From the Diavolezza mountain station the path first leads to the terminus of the chairlift before descending along the Sass Queder ridge to Lej da Diavolezza. Lej da Diavolezza is an ideal resting place - and a break is certainly deserved, because the path to the lake requires concentration and leads over a steep intermediate section. The beautiful surroundings and their flora and fauna are a delight. Another special feature is the Muots Ravulaunas, on whose flank you continue walking. The Muots Ravulaunas is the mountain of ptarmigans. With luck, ptarmigans can still be seen today. Following the slope you reach the Diavolezza valley station. This is an adventure hike that requires a certain amount of surefootedness. Walking time approx. 2 hours, 900 metres of altitude difference in the descent (see map).

Easy hike to Munt Mers:
The terrain is a bit steep in places and requires a certain amount of surefootedness, but the trail is suitable for older children. The fantastic view over the Pers- and Morteratsch Glacier, Piz Palü, Piz Bellavista and Piz Bernina - the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps at 4049 m - will amaze everyone. You go back the same way. The icing on the cake, however, is to start walking before sunrise (with a headlamp), because the spectacle of an awakening day at the Bernina massif is unforgettable. Walking time approx. 2h30, with an altitude difference of 250 metres (see map).

Return journey with the Rhaetian Railway to Zuoz (change in Pontresina)

Alternative hike closer by:

With bus no. 2 to the valley station Corvatsch Surlej. Rail journey to the middle station with a wonderful view of the Engadine lake district - starting point of the hike:

On foot along the wide path and after about 45 minutes you will reach the Fuorcla Surlej, from where you can look at one of the most spectacular panoramas of the Alps. One looks into an enormous arena of ice and rock, in the background the Piz Tschierva, Piz Morteratsch, Piz Bernina with the famous Bianco ridge, Piz Roseg and the Sella group surrounded by impressive glaciers. Around the Fuorcla Surlej there are silent signs of the last ice age. Round rocks, marked by the ice masses, between which small lakes have formed. From the Fuorcla Surlej, the path descends into Val Roseg, with a magnificent view of the entire valley and the majestic glaciers that surround it. After about 2.5 hours of walking through the enchanting beauty of this high valley, you will reach the Roseg Glacier Restaurant, where you are highly recommended to stop for dessert. On foot it takes about 1.5 hours to Pontresina. From there you take the train to Zuoz, where the hotel is happy to pick you up at the train station - please inform the hotel about your time of arrival.

Easier option: From the Roseg Gletscher Restaurant you can take a horse-drawn carriage to Pontresina (approx. 1 hour). Please note that the horse-drawn carriage leaves at 13.45, 14.45 and 15.45 and costs a simple CHF 20 per adult person.

Day 4: Wildlife watching in the national park

Fortify yourself at the breakfast buffet and enjoy your coffee at your leisure. Today is more of a leisurely programme. But there is plenty to marvel at:

We recommend the mostly flat hike into the wildlife-rich Val Trupchun. The tour can also be undertaken in bad weather and offers animal and plant lovers a variety of observation opportunities. This hike is one of the most popular routes in the national park, especially during the deer rutting season at the end of September. The option of a circular tour via the high trail and valley trail is attractive. From the two rest areas of Val Mela and Alp Trupchun, you can observe the animal inhabitants of Val Trupchun up close. Thanks to the geological conditions, the flora in Val Trupchun is among the most beautiful in the entire Engadin! The hike takes approx. 4 hours, with an ascent and descent of approx. 430 metres.

Easier option: outward and/or return journey with the Express Parc Naziunel from Zuoz Staziun to the Varusch park hut.

Enjoy your last evening at the Hotel Castell and treat yourself, your body and your taste buds once again!

Tips for your daily programme:
- Visit the Swiss National Park Centre in Zernez
- Don't forget your binoculars!
- The Hotel Castell offers a shuttle service to/from the car park at the national park on request.

Day 5: Journey home through the Prättigau

Enjoy an extensive breakfast before you start your journey home. We recommend you take the Rhaetian Railway in the direction of the Lower Engadine. The railway line runs along the River Inn to Sagliains and then through the Vereina tunnel to Prättigau and Landquart.

Tipps for your itinerary :

Detour to the Swiss National Park:
We recommend the easy hike in Val Trupchun. A mostly flat hike into the Val Trupchun, which is rich in game. The tour can also be undertaken in bad weather and offers a variety of observation possibilities for animals and Pflanzenfreunden. This hike is one of the most popular routes in the National Park, especially during the rut of the stags at the end of September. The possibility of a round tour via high altitude path and valley path is attractive. From the two resting places Val Mela and Alp Trupchun you can observe the animal inhabitants of Val Trupchun at close range. Thanks to the geological conditions, the flora in Val Trupchun is among the most beautiful in the whole of the Engadine. The hiking time is about 4h20 and there are 440 meters of altitude difference to overcome (see maps).
