Don’t miss the chance to tick the Eiger Trail in the Bernese Oberland or the famous Three Peaks of the Dolomites off your bucket list. Explore the “heart of Switzerland” like William Tell or hike through the most beautiful valleys of Ticino. After your hikes in nature and the mountains, relax your muscles in the hotel’s own wellness area, enjoy warm hospitality, and savour the exquisite cuisine of your host hotels. At Private Selection Hotels & Tours, one thing always applies: the journey is not the only goal – both path and destination offer pure enjoyment.

Stay in one of our wellness, boutique, or luxury Private Selection Hotels & Tours and enjoy a variety of day hikes. Or would you prefer hiking from hotel to hotel? Both options are possible with us! With our so-called “hiking hotel-hopping” offers, you hike from hotel to hotel without luggage, while your baggage is transported to your next stage destination. All hiking routes are carefully curated by our experience designers and tested by leisure hikers.

Frequently asked questions about your hiking holidays – FAQ

1. What is a self-guided hiking holiday?
You walk on your own, at your own pace, while the route, hotels and main logistics are arranged for you in advance. There is no group and no daily guide – instead you receive maps or digital route guidance and simply follow the marked Swiss trail network. It combines the freedom of independent hiking with the comfort of having everything organised.

2. How does the hotel-to-hotel luggage transfer work?
On hotel-to-hotel itineraries your main luggage is moved separately to your next hotel, usually the same day, so it is waiting for you on arrival. You hand it in at the hotel in the morning and walk with only a light daypack. You carry just what you need for the day's stage.

3. Do I need to be very fit, and is it suitable for beginners?
It depends on the route. Switzerland grades trails on the SAC scale: T1–T2 are easy hiking paths suitable for beginners and families, while higher grades are more alpine. Many walks can be shortened using mountain railways and cable cars, and mountain restaurants along the way make breaks easy. Longer multi-day stages reward a reasonable level of fitness.

4. When is the best time of year to go hiking in Switzerland?
The main season runs from roughly late June to September for high-alpine routes, when most passes are snow-free, and from May to October for lakes and lower valleys. September is often considered the sweet spot – reliable conditions, clear views and quieter trails. Early spring is not ideal, as many trails and mountain lifts are still closed.

5. Which region is best for a first hiking trip?
Good starting points include the Bernese Oberland and Jungfrau Region beneath the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, Central Switzerland around Lucerne, and the Engadine in Graubünden. Private Selection covers these areas plus Ticino, Appenzell–Lake Constance, Valais and neighbouring regions such as South Tyrol, so the choice depends on the scenery and difficulty you prefer.

6. Are the hiking holidays guided or independent?
They are designed for guests who want to travel independently but hand over the organisation. Route, hotels and key services are prepared, and you walk at your own rhythm. A guided option can be arranged on request if you would prefer local expertise and company on the trail.

7. Are guided hikes also available?
Yes. On request, we can organise professionally guided hikes with local hiking guides certified by Out & About. This allows you to discover hidden places, learn fascinating insights about nature and the region, and benefit from the guides’ many years of experience. A guided day tour is available from CHF 750.00.

8. Can I stay in one hotel instead of moving every night?
Yes. As an alternative to hotel-to-hotel hiking, you can base yourself in a single Private Selection hotel and set out on varied day hikes from there. This suits guests who prefer to unpack once and combine walking with wellness and gourmet dining at the same address.

9. What can I expect after a day on the trail?
At each stage you return to a 4- or 5-star partner hotel with a spa, regional cuisine and comfortable rooms. This pairing of hiking with wellness and high-quality hospitality is what sets these holidays apart from a simple walking tour.

10. What is included in the package?
This varies by offer, but typically includes overnight stays, breakfast or half board, luggage transfer on hotel-to-hotel routes, and maps or digital route guidance. Many packages add wellness access, a packed lunch or regional transport benefits. The exact inclusions are listed with each individual offer.
