1. When is the best time to visit Switzerland for winter walking?
December to March offers the most reliable snow and the most magical scenery. In high, snow-sure areas such as the Engadin, winter walking often starts as early as November.
2. Do I need special gear, or can I walk in normal boots?
On prepared, marked trails, warm waterproof boots with good grip are usually enough. Dress in layers and take gloves, a hat and poles. On icy stretches, micro-spikes give extra grip.
3. Which are the best winter hiking trails in the Swiss Alps?
Favourites include the Engadin around Lake Sils and St. Moritz, the Bernese Oberland, the Jungfrau Region and the Appenzell Alps near Seealpsee. Our hotels give you direct access to these trails.
4. Is winter walking a good alternative to skiing?
Very much so. Winter walking lets you enjoy the same stunning mountains at your own pace, without lift passes or ski gear – ideal for non-skiers and mixed groups.
5. How do I get to the trails without a car?
Switzerland's rail and bus network is excellent, and many of our hotels are easy to reach by public transport. In several packages, local transport is already included.
6. Are the winter walking trails suitable for beginners?
Yes. Marked winter trails are groomed and easy to follow. Start with shorter routes and allow about 1.25 times longer than a summer walk, as snow makes the going slower.
7. Can I combine winter walking with wellness and spa?
Absolutely – it is one of our specialities. After your walk, unwind in the sauna, pool or spa and enjoy fine regional cuisine in the evening.
8. How fit do I need to be for a winter hike?
A basic level of fitness is enough for most trails. Choose a route that matches your experience, and remember that walking on snow is a little more tiring than in summer.
9. What is included in a winter walking package?
Depending on the offer: a 4-/5-star hotel, breakfast or half board, spa access, local public transport and sometimes hotel-to-hotel luggage transfer.
10. Can I bring children on a winter walking holiday?
Yes. Pick short, gentle routes, dress children warmly in layers and plan regular breaks with hot drinks. Many of our hotels sit right by family-friendly trails.
