Switzerland extraordinary train adventure (short stay)

By train through historical and culinary highlights: Bern - Emmental - Lucerne - steepest cogwheel railway in the world - Pilatus

Day 1
Welcome to Bern!  What would a journey through time in Switzerland be without a visit to the Zytgloggeturm? If you not only want to marvel at the skilfully crafted clock, but also find out more, take a guided tour inside the tower. But it is not the only witness to history in Bern. Bern's Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for 4 decades. It was built around 1200, surrounded by the Aare meander, and fascinates visitors with its imposing sandstone buildings, small alleyways and six kilometres of arcades. The Bernese Historical Museum is a cultural repository for the history of Bern and the world. The artefacts in the collection come from many historical periods - and show different perspectives on social development.

Welcome to the Boutique Hotel Belle Epoque - in the centre of the old town under the arcades, halfway to the Bärenwelt. Check in and enjoy a "Berner Plättli" with a good glass of white wine either straight away - or a little later if it's not yet aperitif time.

If you are interested in today's politics, you are welcome to visit the Federal Palace. Guided tours during non-session times can be booked from Tuesday to Saturday (11.30am French, 3.00pm German) and last 60 minutes. During the session, you have the opportunity to gain an insight into a session of the National Council. Follow the debate for an hour - you will also be given headphones for translation (D-F or vice versa). We will be happy to help you with the booking.

Today you have a free evening, we have - because Bern has so much to offer - no dinner is reserved for you. If you wish, the Belle Epoque team will be happy to reserve a table for you, for example in the oldest restaurant in the city, the "Della Casa", which is as popular a meeting place for interesting people from politics, business and industry as it is for students and old Bernese citizens.

Berne - Emmental - Entlebuch - Lucerne - Mount Pilatus

Day 2

Kapellbrücke in Luzern von Aussen

After breakfast, leave your luggage at the Hotel Belle Epoque and we will take care of it, because we want you to enjoy your day of travelling weightlessly! Your journey back in time takes you on the BLS Regio Express Bern-Emmental - Entlebuch - Lucerne, an insider's tip among Switzerland's railway lines, through the rustic land of Emmental cheese with its defiant farmhouses with low-hanging roofs amidst lush green hills towards Lucerne in around 90 minutes. In Entlebuch you cross the first UNESCO biosphere reserve. Fascinating moorland landscapes and a diverse flora and fauna tell natural stories. Once again, we have taken care of your luggage, because it's worth getting off along the way - for example in Trubschachen to explore the Kambly World of Experience, which takes visitors on a sensory journey into the secrets of the art of pastry-making.

After arriving in Lucerne, we recommend a short stroll through the city. Another fact of our journey through time: The world-famous Chapel Bridge, the covered wooden bridge built over the Reuss around 1260, connects the "New Town" with Lucerne's Old Town. Also visit the TimeValée - discover the multifaceted portfolio, which includes over 20 watch and jewellery brands. The boutique offers unique shopping experiences on over 1000 m2 and provides an exciting and fascinating journey into the world of coveted luxury brands.

However, Lucerne is not your destination for today. The highlight of your journey through time is yet to come. If you are travelling between June and October*, one of Lake Lucerne's historic paddle steamers (the oldest of the fleet, the DS Unterwalden, was allowed to present its engine before it was installed at the 1899 World Exhibition in Paris) will take you to Alpnachstad. Here you board the steepest cogwheel railway in the world - the 4168m long railway line from the lakeshore to Pilatus Kulm was opened in 1889 and has held this record ever since, with a gradient of 48%.

At the Hotel Pilatus Kulm, the historic pioneering achievement from 1890 with modern comforts, your luggage awaits you - and probably the most beautiful view you have ever seen in a hotel. After 5.30 pm - the departure of the last gondola and the last cable car - the mountain is all yours. Then enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the Alps and the Lucerne lake basin over an aperitif. Afterwards, you will be spoilt with a 4-course farewell dinner. Important for you to know: Nowhere do the stars shine more intensely and the sunrises are more spectacular than on the Pilatus Kulm.

Day 3 - Pilatus - Kriens - Lucerne and back home

back to Lucerne with Dragonride

After breakfast at the hotel and the return journey "to the here and now" by cable car and gondolas to Kriens-Lucerne, the "official part" of your journey through time in Switzerland comes to an end.
