Experience the most spectacular nature highlights of the Swiss Alps ! Lean back in the most scenic panoramic trains such as the Glacier Express and Bernina Express and enjoy the view of mountains, lakes and glaciers through the panoramic window. Over sophisticated engineering structures and through beautiful natural and cultural landscapes - get on and off wherever you like. Whether it's a hike through the Rhine Gorge, a visit in the Swiss National Park, a stroll through St. Moritz, a plate of traditional Pizzoccheri in Poschiavo or a scoop of ice cream on the Piazza of Tirano (Italy)! In the evening, let the impressions in the spa and wellness area of the Grisons Private Selection Hotels take effect on you and enjoy culinary creations made from local products, accompanied by a fine drop of wine from the wine cellar!

Day 1: Welcome to the Regio - through the Rhine Gorge to Davos

The best place to start your journey is Andermatt - the ideal starting point for your journey of discovery in Graubünden. The train climbs leisurely towards the Oberalp Pass. The source of the Rhine is very close by. The source is at the small, mystical Tomasee lake at the foot of Piz Badus. The Rhine connects the Alps with the North Sea and is one of the most important rivers in Europe. It is in the spirit of this connection between mountain and sea that the highest lighthouse in the world (2046 metres above sea level) is located on the Oberalp Pass. On the next section of the route, you immerse yourself in the Rhine Gorge. The locals call the monumental gorge between Ilanz and Reichnau Ruinaulta in Romansh. The gorge was formed 10,000 years ago by the Flims landslide and today forms a unique natural backdrop: turquoise-green water and rock faces up to 350 metres high. Enjoy lunch in Chur before travelling along the Albula line to Filisur. Here we recommend a round trip on the ‘Landwasser-Express’ funicular railway. The nostalgia train will take you to Davos. A historic journey with train compositions from the 1920s will make your railway lover's heart beat faster!

What a railway experience day! Round it off with relaxing hours and culinary delights at the Grischa Hotel**** in Davos Platz.

Tips for your day's programme:

  • Medium-difficulty mountain hike from the Oberalp Pass to Lake Toma, the source of the Rhine, lasting approx. 4-5 hours (see maps)
  • Easy, impressive hike from Valendas to Versam in the heart of the Rhine Gorge (see maps)
Travelling by public transport to Andermatt:
From Zurich and Lucerne you can reach Andermatt in +/- two hours via Erstfeld and Göschenen.
From Valais, you can reach Andermatt with the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway on the beautiful Glacier Express route through the Goms and the Furka Tunnel.
From Ticino, you can reach Andermatt through the Gotthard tunnel via Göschenen.

Please note that the ticket for the journey to Andermatt is not included in the offer.

Travelling by car:
You have the option of parking your car in the P+Rail car park in Chur. The cost of a parking space is CHF 12 per day.  For the excursion to the Rhine Gorge from Chur, we recommend travelling back to Ilanz (e.g. with the Rhine Gorge Adventure Train. This train runs every Saturday and Sunday.

Day 2: Pure nature in the Engadin

After a hearty breakfast with a selection of natural products from the region, drop off your suitcase at reception and set off weightlessly - with just your luggage for the day on your back - on your next Grisons railway and nature experience. From Klosters, you travel through the Vereina Tunnel from Prättigau into the Engadin. Rustic, typical Engadin mountain villages adorn the landscape along the railway. For nature lovers, we recommend a trip to the Swiss National Park. The National Park Centre is located in Zernez. Learn more about the fauna and flora, the history and the inexhaustible diversity of nature. You can experience the national park and in particular its flora and fauna up close on a 3-hour circular hike into the park's most wildlife-rich valley - the Val Trupchun - our tip!

End your day tour in Zuoz, high above the rooftops at the Hotel Castell****S. Here, art enthusiasts will find an extraordinary collection of works of art, relaxation seekers will find pure relaxation in a fascinating world of light and steam - be it in the hammam or Japanese rock bath - and gourmets will find flavour perfection and harmony.

Tips for your daily programme:

  • Visit the Swiss National Park Centre in Zernez: Info
  • Hike Val Trupchun: see map material
  • Art tour by the hotel management at the Hotel Castell, every Thursday at 5.00 pm (registration required)

Day 3: On the Bernina line through the valley "Val Poschiavo" and back

Enjoy the best from a Swiss Alpine breakfast buffet in the Engadine. The most spectacular Alpine crossing begins in St. Moritz - on request the hotel offers you a free shuttle service to the train station (if not possible, there are frequent bus/train connections). On the route of the Bernina Express you meander harmoniously past lakes, mountains and glaciers through the Engadine mountains. The roof of the RhB, the Ospizio Bernina, is enthroned at 2253 metres above sea level. Masterly construction engineering and line management give the line its UNESCO character. The circular viaduct at Brusio is clear proof of this. So many impressions make you hungry. We recommend lunch in the picturesque village centre of Poschiavo. Be sure to choose one of the 13 inns that have signed the "100% Valposchiavo" charter. Here, local products find a very special place on the menu. Labelled dishes guarantee a composition of 100% local raw materials! The classic: fine pizzoccheri and a glass of Valtellina wine! - OR continue to Tirano (Italy) enjoy pizza & pasta and do not forget to watch out for a scoop of Gelati

On the way back, enjoy the view of the unspoilt Alpine panorama once again. Back in St. Moritz we recommend a stroll through the shopping mile of the alpine town take the frquent bus or train back to Celerina, enjoy relaxing spa moments and upscale culinary delights at Cresta Palace Hotel****S

Tips for your day programme:
  • Visit to the Caviglia glacier mill
  • Lunch in a restaurant "100% Valposchiavo": Infos and participating restaurants
  • Guided tour of Poschiavo village (reservation required)

Day 4: On the Albula line over architectural works of art

After dropping off your luggage and enjoying a delicious breakfast, you board your next railway experience: the Albula line. Here, the red railway overcomes a difference in altitude of 1000 metres, and thanks to the Solis Viaduct, Landwasser Viaduct and the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda, it does so without a cogwheel. The line has existed since 1903 and thus dates from the time of the railway pioneers. Like the Bernina line, the showpiece of the Albula line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be sure to visit the Albula Railway Museum in Bergün and learn about the background of the historic railway line. You can enjoy lunch in the "Büfèt" on original seating furniture from various dining and saloon cars. Take a digestive walk through the picturesque village of Bergün. Afterwards, the last section of the Albula Line awaits you: past Filisur, Tiefencastel and Thusis to the Alpine metropolis of Chur. On this section, the 65-metre high and 136-metre long Landwasser Viaduct delights with its beauty and boldness - one of the most elegant bridge constructions in Graubünden and the most photographed work of art on the Rhaetian Railway. Once you arrive in Chur, another railway highlight awaits you: the Arosa Line. Within an hour, the red train takes you from the city to the mountains. While you stroll past the city wall, the Maltese Tower and the Upper Gate at the beginning, the train meanders through untouched mountain scenery minutes later. The mountain railway seems to float on the Langwieserviadukt over the Plessur. In just one hour you climb 1,000 metres in altitude and reach the Swiss holiday paradise of Arosa.

Breathe in the fresh mountain air on your walk to the Blatter's Arosa - Hotel**** (or call the concierge and ask for a free pick-up service at the train station).

Enjoy the deep warmth in the sauna area and let the impressions of this spectacular railway adventure settle as you float in the water. After that you enjoy a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant.
