Zurich - Spiez/Interlaken - Zermatt / St. Moritz/Celerina - Lake Lugano - Lucerne

Discover the most beautiful panoramic routes in Switzerland by train in 5 to 7 days. First take the Golden Pass line from Zurich via the Brünig to Interlaken/Spiez, then on to sunny Valais and on to Zermatt with the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. There it is worth making a detour to the Gornergrat before you take the world-famous route of the Glacier Express to St.Moritz/Celerina and enjoy the breathtaking panorama the next day. The journey continues exceptionally by post bus - the "Palm Express" - from the mountains to the palm trees on Lake Lugano. The last stage is then covered by the Gotthard Panorama Express, first by train and then by boat across Lake Lucerne to Lucerne, the end point of the tour. The diversity of the Swiss landscape will amaze you!

Day 1: Golden Pass Line

In Lucerne you board the ultramodern panorama train and start on your train adventure. The Golden Pass Panoramic Line takes you right through the heart of Switzerland! After having crossed the Brünig you reach Interlaken and the crystal-clear mountain lakes of Thun and Brienz. Keep your eyes wide open, and you can spot the silver foaming Giessbach Falls’ plunging waters on the opposite shore.

Day 2: Matterhorn Gotthard Railway & Gornergrat

The Matterhorn Gotthard Railway brings you across the picturesque Mattertal directly to the car-free town of Zermatt. Here you should definitely make a detour to the Gornergrat ridge and enjoy the majestic sight of the Matterhorn. Already the journey up there is an experience on its own – alongside impressive waterfalls, dense pine forests and colourful meadows of wildflowers.

Day 3: Glacier Express

Today is the big day! Time to discover the world-famous route of the Glacier Express. To start with, in the Mattertal valley you will marvel at the sight of ice and rock belonging to the numerous four-thousand-metre peaks. The ride continues through the Kipfen Gorge to Brig and from there passing lovely Goms until Andermatt. Soon after, you will reach the highest point of the trip: the Oberalppass, 2000 metres above sealevel. Did you know that the Lai da Tuma (Toma lake), the source of the river Rhine is very close to the Oberalppass? Descending towards the valley the train passes Disentis monastery before reaching the most spectacular stretch of the route: The Rhine Gorge, also named "Swiss Grand Canyon". The canyon emerged about 10.000 years ago following the Flims rockslide. Over time the Rhine dug a gorge through the fallen rocks and formed one of the most impressive wonders of nature. But the greatest highlight is still to come: the 65 metre high "Landwasserviadukt" structure just before Filisur. Following that, the train starts on the next highlight: the UNESCO World Heritage stretch of the Albula railway line. An unbelievable array of highlights!

Day 4: Palm Express

For a change, you will continue your travel by Postbus. In a 3-hour ride it takes you from the awesome Swiss glacier and mountain world to the palm trees on the shore of Lake Lugano. On the way you will admire the deepblue lakes of the Upper Engadin and of northern Lombardy. After Lago di Mezzola and Lago di Como follows Lago di Lugano – all three lakes are surrounded by quaint holiday villages. The postbus stops directly in front of today’s destination, the Parco San Marco Lifestyle Beach Resort****S with breathtaking views of Lake Lugano.

Day 5: Gotthard Panorama Express

After a Mediterranean style gourmet breakfast you will leave the south and head back northwards. Look forward to an unparalleled ride through a breathtaking landscape on the historic Gotthard route with its many loop tunnels and bridges. Just sit back and enjoy! In Flüelen on Lake Lucerne you will change to the nostalgic steam boat or the motor boat which will take you over the glistening lake to Lucerne.
